Marlowe vs ProWritingAid: Manuscript Reports Compared
Memoirist and former hospice chaplain writing about grief, memory, and finding meaning late.
If you only want an outside read of a finished novel, Marlowe is the cheaper buy. A Marlowe Pro report costs $29.95 once, or $19.95 for a month that includes 4 reports, while a ProWritingAid Manuscript Analysis costs one Story Credit at $25 to $50 depending on your plan, on top of whatever you pay for the plan itself.
ProWritingAid is the better buy if you also need a line editor. Its Premium plan is a full sentence-level editor that runs inside Word, Google Docs and Scrivener, and its story reports are an add-on to that. Marlowe has no editor at all: it reads and reports, and you make every change wherever you write.
StoryWith AI is our own product, so weigh what we say about it accordingly. We also say below where Marlowe and ProWritingAid are each the better fit, including over us.
Key takeaways
- Marlowe is a report, not an editor. The Pro report covers plot, arc, pacing, character, conflict, theme and setting, and the free Basic report covers mechanical checks such as clichés, repeated phrases and adverbs.
- ProWritingAid splits the job in two: a line editor (Premium, $120 a year) and credit-based story reports (Manuscript Analysis, Virtual Beta Reader) at one credit per run, plus a single-chapter Chapter Critique included in paid plans.
- For one read, Marlowe costs $19.95 to $29.95. ProWritingAid costs $50 on the free plan, or $155 to $169 in the first year if you also take a yearly paid plan.
- For five reads in a year, Marlowe costs $99.75 at most (five separate months of its subscription). ProWritingAid costs $245 on the free plan with credits, and $264 to $290 with a yearly paid plan.
- Both vendors state in writing that they do not train on your manuscript.
- The prices are not like for like: ProWritingAid's plan price buys a year of line editing, which Marlowe does not sell.
What does each report actually contain?
Here is what each vendor says its reports cover, side by side. Marlowe's Pro report is one document. ProWritingAid spreads the same ground across separate reports, each bought or run on its own.
| Report | Price basis | Sections the vendor lists |
|---|---|---|
| Marlowe Basic | Free | Dialogue vs. narrative usage; sentence stats and usability score; explicit language finder; cliché finder; repetitive phrases; repeated adverbs; repeated adjectives; misspellings finder |
| Marlowe Pro | 1 credit | Overall assessment; author voice; plot and narrative arc; story elements and pacing; character, conflict and theme; setting and explicit content; key recommendations and items to edit; story structure guide (the Basic page adds inconsistencies and items to revisit, and a final review checklist) |
| Marlowe Market Fit | 2 credits | 12 sections, including 20 comparable titles, 5 elevator pitches, 3 book descriptions, KDP and ad keywords, a market readiness score across 7 dimensions |
| PWA Manuscript Analysis | 1 Story Credit | Story Overview; Competitive Landscape; Narrative Themes; Plot and Structure (pacing, foreshadowing, inconsistencies); Characters (voice, perspective, backstory, arc); Setting |
| PWA Virtual Beta Reader | 1 Story Credit | General Impressions; Reading Experience (where readers might stop); Reader Insights (what feels fresh or cliché); Marketing Ideas (titles, comparable books) |
| PWA Chapter Critique | Included in paid plans, daily limit | One chapter: Overview, Chapter Outline, Dialogue and more, on its core strengths and areas to improve |

The practical difference: Marlowe's single Pro report covers more ground, including voice and a structure guide. For both a craft read and a simulated reader read from ProWritingAid, you spend two credits. Our ProWritingAid Manuscript Analysis review goes through those in more detail, and our Marlowe review walks through the Pro report section by section.
Does Marlowe do line editing, and does ProWritingAid?
Marlowe does not. The Marlowe page says "It doesn't write or rewrite a single word of your book," and the Authors A.I. FAQ says Marlowe "never rewrites the text of your book." Neither page mentions a Word add-in or an in-document editor. Basic flags clichés, repeated phrases and misspellings, but as a report you then act on by hand.
ProWritingAid is a line editor first. As listed on prowritingaid.com/pricing on 29 October 2026, Premium includes "Unlimited line editing report runs," advanced style improvements and "25+ writing analysis reports," and the page lists Google Docs, Microsoft Office and Desktop Everywhere integrations. The Manuscript Analysis page names Google Docs, MS Word and Scrivener.

What are the file and length limits?
Both tools handle a full novel. The detail to check is the lower limit, where each vendor gives two different figures.
| Limit | Marlowe | ProWritingAid |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum length | 20,000 words on the Marlowe page; 10,000 words in the FAQ | Manuscript Analysis: "at least 4,000 words" suggested on the feature page; 6,000 recommended in the help centre |
| Maximum length | "No maximum," but books over 120,000 words "may take longer to process" | Story reports: up to 300,000 words per run; past that they "may still run" but "might not produce optimal results" |
| Chapter Critique | Not offered | "Up to 6,000 words" (help article updated 3 September 2026); the word limits article (updated 10 May 2026) still says 4,000 |
| File types | .docx or ePub; Scrivener users compile to ePub | Web Editor and integrations (Word, Google Docs, Scrivener); no list of upload formats on the feature page |
| Fiction vs non-fiction | Expertise "primarily with fiction"; 22 fiction genres for comparison | Report detects genre automatically; "You may find the most value when using it for fiction" |
Limits as listed on authors.ai/marlowe, authors.ai/faq, prowritingaid.com/features/manuscript-analysis and ProWritingAid's word limits article on 29 October 2026.
If your draft sits between 10,000 and 20,000 words, ask Authors A.I. which figure applies before you pay.
What do they say about privacy and AI training?
Both are clear, in their own words.
| Vendor | Statement | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Authors A.I. | "Your manuscript is never used to train Marlowe or generate content." | authors.ai/marlowe |
| Authors A.I. | "No. We never use manuscripts for training." Analysis runs in a private data vault, no human reviews uploads, and you can delete your data from Account Details. | Authors A.I. FAQ |
| ProWritingAid | "We never use your writing to train the AI (or any of our algorithms)." | Manuscript Analysis page |
| ProWritingAid | "ProWritingAid never uses your work or your writing to train our AI models or algorithms." | Does ProWritingAid use AI? (last updated 12 July 2026) |
Quotes as shown on each page on 29 October 2026.
ProWritingAid adds that its story reports use large language models "to analyse your writing and create the report," with generative AI limited to Sparks and Rephrase, and it does not name its model providers. The Authors A.I. FAQ says Marlowe is not an LLM but its own "homegrown AI."
One content limit to know: ProWritingAid's feature page says analysis "may be unsuccessful for texts incorporating hateful, harassing, or sexually explicit content." Marlowe, by contrast, has an explicit content analysis section in Pro.
How much does each cost?
Marlowe, as listed on authors.ai/pricing and the FAQ on 29 October 2026:
| Marlowe option | Price | Credits |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | Free | Not applicable |
| Single Pro report | $29.95 one time | 1, does not expire |
| Subscription, monthly | $19.95 a month | 4 a month, no rollover |
| Subscription, annual | $159 a year (FAQ) | 48 a year, no rollover |
| Pro + Market Fit bundle | $39.90 | One of each |
Prices as listed on authors.ai/pricing and authors.ai/faq on 29 October 2026. The pricing page does not show the annual price in its text, and its metadata says "Pro plans from $13.25/mo," which matches $159 divided by 12. The FAQ says "Each Marlowe Pro submission uses one credit, even if it's the same manuscript." Neither page states a refund policy.
ProWritingAid, as listed on prowritingaid.com/pricing and prowritingaid.com/credits on 29 October 2026:
| Your plan | Plan price | 1 credit | 3 credits | 10 credits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $50 | $145 | $450 |
| Premium | $30 a month, $120 a year or $399 lifetime | $35 | $100 | $300 |
| Premium Pro | $36 a month, $144 a year or $699 lifetime | $25 | $70 | $175 |
Prices in USD as listed on prowritingaid.com/pricing and prowritingaid.com/credits on 29 October 2026, when the pricing page's sharing title read "Sale Now On" and its description mentioned a "Storyteller's Sale"; the page text showed no sale end date. Credits "do not expire" and are nonrefundable. Monthly plans cannot be refunded; yearly and lifetime plans have a three-day window.
What does a revision cycle cost on each?
One whole-manuscript read per revision cycle, on a 90,000-word novel. "Spread out" means reads months apart, so a monthly plan is bought again each time.
Marlowe Pro reads:
- 1 read: one month of the subscription is $19.95 (you get 4 credits and cancel). A single report is $29.95.
- 3 reads, spread out: 3 months × $19.95 = $59.85. Three single reports = 3 × $29.95 = $89.85.
- 5 reads, spread out: 5 × $19.95 = $99.75. The annual plan is $159.
- Any number of reads up to 4 inside one month: $19.95.
ProWritingAid Manuscript Analysis reads, first year:
- Free plan, credits only: 1 read $50; 3 reads $145 (3-pack); 5 reads $145 + 2 × $50 = $245.
- Premium yearly ($120): 1 read $120 + $35 = $155; 3 reads $120 + $100 = $220; 5 reads $120 + $100 + 2 × $35 = $290.
- Premium Pro yearly ($144): 1 read $144 + $25 = $169; 3 reads $144 + $70 = $214; 5 reads $144 + $70 + 2 × $25 = $264.
| Reads in a year | Marlowe, cheapest route | PWA Free + credits | PWA Premium yearly + credits | PWA Premium Pro yearly + credits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $19.95 | $50 | $155 | $169 |
| 3 | $59.85 | $145 | $220 | $214 |
| 5 | $99.75 | $245 | $290 | $264 |
Calculated from prices listed on authors.ai/pricing, authors.ai/faq, prowritingaid.com/pricing and prowritingaid.com/credits on 29 October 2026. Our arithmetic, not vendor quotes.
Two corrections make this fairer to ProWritingAid. First, the Premium and Premium Pro columns include a year of line editing and Chapter Critiques, which Marlowe does not offer at any price. Second, if you add Virtual Beta Reader to each cycle, double the credit cost on ProWritingAid: 5 cycles of both reports on Premium Pro yearly is $144 + $175 (10-pack) = $319.
The reverse case: if you would pay for a line editor anyway, the marginal cost of ProWritingAid's story report is just the credit, $25 to $35. That is about the same as a single Marlowe report. Our ProWritingAid break-even piece covers when the plan itself pays back.
Who should choose which?
| Your situation | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One read of a finished novel, lowest cost | Marlowe | $19.95 to $29.95, and Basic is free |
| Several full rereads in a year | Marlowe | 48 credits for $159; ProWritingAid charges a credit per run |
| You need a line editor in Word, Google Docs or Scrivener | ProWritingAid | Marlowe has no editor |
| You want chapter-by-chapter critique while drafting | ProWritingAid | Chapter Critique is included in paid plans; Marlowe needs 10,000 to 20,000 words minimum |
| You want comps, pitches and keywords for launch | Marlowe | Market Fit is built for this and bundles at $39.90 |
| A simulated reader read as its own report | ProWritingAid | Virtual Beta Reader; treat it as a first pass, not reader evidence |
| Manuscript over 300,000 words | Marlowe | No stated maximum; ProWritingAid says results past 300,000 words might not be optimal |
| Explicit content in the draft | Marlowe | ProWritingAid warns analysis may fail on sexually explicit text |
| Non-fiction | Neither is clearly built for it | Marlowe says its expertise is mainly fiction; ProWritingAid says Manuscript Analysis gives the most value on fiction |
Based on features and limits listed on each vendor's pages on 29 October 2026.
If you are weighing more than these two, our Marlowe vs Fictionary vs AutoCrit comparison covers the scene-by-scene and platform options.
Where StoryWith AI fits
StoryWith AI does a different part of the job. You import a .docx, .md, .txt or .pdf, it splits the book into chapters and scenes, and its analyzers (structure, setups and payoffs, pacing and emotional arc, continuity, dialogue, theme, character arcs, scene purpose) feed one ranked list, Book Health, where each finding links to the scene it came from. It does not draft or rewrite your prose unless you ask for an edit and accept it.
On cost per cycle, our pricing FAQ puts a book-level pass of a 90,000-word novel at about 18 AI text actions. The Author plan ($19 a month or $149 a year) includes 500 a month, so repeat passes within that allowance add no cost. Paid plans also let you send excerpts to your own readers by private link and see where each one stopped. We do not supply readers, and our AI reader personas are a simulated first pass.
Where the others beat us: StoryWith AI does no line editing, so ProWritingAid is the right tool for sentence polish, and it works inside Word, Google Docs and Scrivener, while we run on the web and Android. Marlowe is cheaper than our yearly plans for one or two reads, and its Market Fit report covers KDP keywords, ad-targeting keywords and retailer book descriptions, which no StoryWith AI plan lists. If you want a single report and a clean exit, buy the Marlowe report.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is Marlowe or ProWritingAid cheaper for one manuscript read?
Marlowe. As listed on 29 October 2026, a single Marlowe Pro report is $29.95, and one month of the subscription is $19.95 with 4 credits. A ProWritingAid Manuscript Analysis credit is $50 on the free plan, $35 on Premium and $25 on Premium Pro, and the paid plans cost $30 to $36 a month or $120 to $144 a year on top.
Does Marlowe have a line editor like ProWritingAid?
No. Authors A.I. says Marlowe "never rewrites the text of your book," and its pages describe no in-document editor or Word add-in. Its free Basic report flags clichés, repeated phrases, adverbs and misspellings, but you make the changes yourself. ProWritingAid Premium is a full line editor that runs inside Word, Google Docs and Scrivener.
Is ProWritingAid Manuscript Analysis included in Premium?
No. ProWritingAid's help centre says Manuscript Analysis and Virtual Beta Reader are "Not included. Available as an add-on." Each run costs one Story Credit. Premium and Premium Pro get discounted credits, and Chapter Critique (one chapter at a time) is included in paid plans with a daily limit.
Does rerunning a revised draft cost extra on either tool?
Yes on both. The Authors A.I. FAQ says "Each Marlowe Pro submission uses one credit, even if it's the same manuscript." ProWritingAid charges one credit per run of each story report. Marlowe's subscription credits do not roll over; ProWritingAid's credits do not expire.
