AI developmental editing
An AI developmental editor for your first pass
A developmental edit is the most valuable edit you can buy and the hardest to afford. StoryWith AI does the structural first pass in minutes, so when you hire a human, you pay for judgment instead of for finding the obvious.

At a glance
Structure and beats
See whether setups pay off and the turning points land where the story needs them.
Pacing you can see
Tension and emotional arc chapter by chapter, so a sagging middle is a shape on a chart, not a hunch.
Continuity across the book
Contradictions in names, timelines and facts, found across the whole manuscript at once.
A readiness score
One score that moves as you revise, so you can see the draft getting closer.
What a developmental editor actually does
A developmental editor is not a proofreader. They read the book as a whole and answer one question: does this hold together?
That means the shape of the plot, whether the middle sags, whether your protagonist wants something the reader can see, whether the ending was set up, and whether chapter nine contradicts chapter three.
The usual result is an editorial letter, often with notes in the manuscript. The real work happens afterwards, when you revise from it.
What a human developmental edit costs
The Editorial Freelancers Association's 2026 rate chart puts developmental editing at 3-3.5 cents a word for fiction and 4-5 cents for non-fiction. For a 90,000-word novel, that is about $2,700-$3,150.
A manuscript assessment, a reader's report without notes in the manuscript, runs 1.5-1.8 cents a word on the same chart. Either way, a good editor is often booked weeks ahead.
Work out the cost for your word countWhat AI can check reliably
Software is good at the parts of a developmental edit that need the whole book held in memory at once.
- Continuity across hundreds of pages: names, ages, timelines and who knew what when.
- Setups and payoffs: whether every payoff was planted.
- Pacing and emotional arc, chapter by chapter.
- Character arcs: where change starts, stalls or never arrives.
- Scene purpose: scenes that are well written but change nothing.
- Dialogue patterns: voices that blur together, and exposition in disguise.
What still needs a human
Taste. Whether your voice is working, whether the book is commercial, whether the ending is earned rather than merely present, and whether something you did on purpose reads as a choice or a mistake.
A good editor also knows the market and the reader you are writing for. No software should pretend to.
The order that gets the most from an editor
- Run the AI pass on the full draft and fix the structural findings.
- Test the opening on AI reader personas, then on a few real beta readers.
- Run the analysis again and check that the readiness score has moved.
- Hire a developmental editor for the questions that are left.
That way the editor reads a stronger draft, and you pay a person for judgment, not for catching contradictions.
Test chapters on AI reader personasHow it differs from other AI manuscript tools
Report tools hand you a snapshot of the whole book to read and act on yourself. Scene-by-scene tools ask you to enter story elements as you go.
StoryWith AI links every finding to its passage, keeps the list current as you revise, and puts reader feedback in the same project. Our comparison guides say where each alternative is the better choice.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Can AI do developmental editing?
It can do much of the first pass: structure, pacing, continuity, setups and payoffs, character arcs and scene purpose across the whole book. It cannot replace an editor's judgment about voice, market and whether the book moves a reader.
What is the best AI for developmental editing?
Look for one that reads the whole manuscript rather than a chapter at a time, links each finding to its passage, and lets you check again after you revise. StoryWith AI does all three and adds reader feedback. Try any tool on your own draft before you pay.
How much does a developmental edit cost?
On the EFA's 2026 rate chart, fiction developmental editing runs 3-3.5 cents a word, about $2,700-$3,150 for a 90,000-word novel. The free calculator works it out for your word count.
Is an AI developmental edit a replacement for a human one?
No. It is the pass you run before a human one, so the editor works on a stronger draft and spends their time on judgment.
Does it rewrite my manuscript?
No. It reads and diagnoses. Nothing it produces goes into your manuscript unless you choose to put it there.
Does it work for non-fiction?
Yes. Structure checks apply to any book, and non-fiction adds argument mapping and soundness checks.
Is my manuscript used to train AI models?
No. It is private to you and the people you invite, and it is not used to train AI models.
