FAQ
Questions authors ask about StoryWith AI
Plain answers about what the studio does, who can read your manuscript, what it costs, and how it compares with other tools.
What StoryWith AI does
Who is StoryWith AI for?
Novelists, memoirists and non-fiction authors who have a draft, or part of one, and want to know what to fix before an editor, agent or reader sees it. It reads what you wrote, checks structure, pacing, continuity, dialogue and more, and ranks what to work on next.
Can StoryWith AI write my book for me?
That is not what it is built for. The analyzers read your draft and report findings; they do not produce chapters. If you select a passage and ask for a rewrite, the result is a suggestion, and your text changes only when you accept it. The new book wizard can sketch an outline and an opening scene to start from, which you can keep, change or delete.
What is Book Health?
Book Health is the single ranked list that every analyzer reports into, sorted by severity with duplicates removed. In the studio it is the Diagnostics overview. Each finding opens the passage that caused it, and a finding marked out of date means the manuscript changed after that check ran.
What file types can I import, and what does an import cost?
Word (.docx), Markdown (.md), plain text (.txt) and PDF files with selectable text, or you can paste the text. The import splits the manuscript into chapters and scenes, and you review the split before it is saved. It uses one AI text action per 100,000 characters, and the cost is shown before you confirm. Any book exports again as Markdown, plain text, Word or PDF.
Does it work for memoir and non-fiction?
Yes. Set a book of ideas up as non-fiction to get argument mapping, soundness checks, fact-check support against the sources you add, and citations with APA, MLA and Chicago export. Set a memoir up as fiction with the Memoir genre to get the narrative checks instead: arc, pacing, timeline, consistency and dialogue. Personal essays and narrative non-fiction work the same way.
Which languages does StoryWith AI support?
There are two answers. The interface is available in 10 languages: English, Traditional and Simplified Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Lithuanian, Spanish, Thai, Vietnamese and Indonesian. A manuscript can be in any language on the book language list, which has 37 entries including German, French, Portuguese and Arabic, and the AI answers about a book in that book's language. A few counting metrics, such as reading ease and passive voice, work for English only, and the app says so instead of showing a number.
Is there an iPhone or Android app?
Not on the App Store yet. On an iPhone or iPad, StoryWith AI runs in Safari or any other modern browser. On Android there is also an app on Google Play. It is the same account everywhere, so your books are the same wherever you sign in.
Can I use StoryWith AI inside ChatGPT or Claude?
Yes. Add StoryWith AI as a connector in Claude, ChatGPT or another AI app that supports connectors, then ask about your manuscript there. The connected app can read your books and run StoryWith AI analyses with your credits, but it never writes or rewrites your manuscript, and it cannot publish, delete or share your books. Connecting works on every plan, including the free one.
Does the AI write my book for me?
Not unless you ask. It writes from your words, and nothing goes into your book until you click to keep it.
I've never written anything. Is this for me?
Yes, that's who we built it for. If you can tell a friend what happened, you can tell your co-writer.
Do I need a microphone?
No. You can type anywhere you can talk.
I already have a manuscript. What happens to it?
Upload it and we read the whole book and map its chapters and characters. Then you run the checks you want, see what to fix first, test it on readers and build your pitch kit. You decide every change.
Which languages can I write in?
You can write your book in 35 languages, including English, Spanish, Lithuanian, Japanese and Thai. The studio itself comes in 10 languages.
What is StoryWith AI?
StoryWith AI reads your manuscript and tells you what to fix. It analyzes structure, pacing, character arcs, dialogue, continuity and readability, gathers real reader feedback, and turns it all into a prioritized list of what to do next.
Does StoryWith AI count as AI-generated content on Amazon KDP?
It depends on how you use it. Passages the co-writer writes for you, even from your own telling, count as AI-generated under Amazon's policy, even if you edit them afterwards, so declare them when you publish. Feedback, analysis and edits on prose you wrote yourself count as AI-assisted, which Amazon does not ask you to declare. Always check Amazon's current guidelines before you publish.
Does StoryWith AI work for non-fiction?
Yes. Alongside the fiction analyzers, non-fiction books get argument-soundness checks, fact-check support, coverage mapping, and a proposal generator.
What does StoryWith AI analyze?
For fiction: structure, pacing, emotional arc, character arcs, dialogue, continuity, readability, theme and scene purpose. For non-fiction: argument soundness, fact-check support and citations. Every finding lands in one ranked list.
Does StoryWith AI change my text?
Only when you ask it to. Analyses produce findings and suggestions, and an inline AI action replaces a passage only after you accept the result.
Which file formats can I import?
.docx, .md, .txt and .pdf. A scanned PDF with no selectable text has to be saved as .docx or .md first.
Can I use StoryWith AI on my phone?
Yes. It works in any modern mobile browser, and there is an Android app on Google Play that uses the same account.
Why isn't my 6-digit sign-in code working?
StoryWith AI has no passwords. You enter your email address and we send you a 6-digit code. A code is valid for 10 minutes. After that it stops working — ask for a fresh one with “Resend code”. If no code arrives, check your spam and promotions folders, and make sure you entered the same address you signed up with. Only the newest code works, so use the most recent email if you asked more than once. You can also sign in with Google or Apple instead of using a code.
How do I import a manuscript?
Open a book and choose “Import” from the manuscript menu. We read .docx, .md, .txt and .pdf files, and split what you upload into chapters and scenes. Importing into a book that already has chapters rebuilds it from the file, so read the review step before you confirm. A file that will not import is usually empty, password-protected, or a scanned PDF with no selectable text — save it again as .docx or .md and try once more.
Why won't an analyzer run?
Analyzers spend credits. Every membership includes a monthly allowance of text and image credits that resets on your renewal date, and an analyzer stops being available once that allowance is used up. If you still have credits left, the model provider may be busy — wait a moment and try again. An empty scene has nothing to analyse, so add some writing first.
Do I need to finish the book first?
No, and you probably shouldn't wait. Coverage and continuity scans work on three chapters as well as thirty, and catching a structural problem at chapter 3 saves you the twelve chapters you'd have built on top of it.
I write in a genre you've never mentioned. Will it work?
Yes. The analysers look at structure, continuity, pacing and dialogue, the things every narrative has. Nothing is tuned to a specific genre, and you can ignore any finding you disagree with.
Privacy and your manuscript
Who can read my book?
Only you and the collaborators and readers you invite. We never train AI on your work, and we never sell your data.
Is my manuscript private?
Yes. It is visible only to you and the collaborators and readers you invite, and it is not used to train AI models.
Is my manuscript used to train AI models?
No. Your manuscript stays yours: we don't train AI models on your work and we don't sell your data. It's visible only to you and the collaborators and readers you invite.
Who can see my manuscript?
You, the collaborators you invite to that book, and the members of an organization if you move the book into one. Readers in a feedback session see only the excerpts you add to it, never the whole manuscript. Staff do not open your manuscripts unless you ask for help in a support request.
Is my writing used to train AI, and which AI reads it?
StoryWith AI does not use your content to train AI models, and promises at least 30 days of notice before any change to that. When you run an AI feature, only the text that feature needs is sent through the Vercel AI Gateway to the Google Gemini models we use. Image prompts are built from your prose and go to Leonardo. How those providers handle requests is set by their own terms.
Can I get my writing back out?
Yes, whenever you like. Any book exports as Markdown, plain text, Word or PDF, and non-fiction bibliographies export from the Sources page. The data section of Settings downloads your whole account as one machine-readable file. Cancelling a plan does not lock your books.
How do I delete my account or a book?
Delete your account from Settings, and your profile, books, AI results and reader sessions are deleted immediately. If you can no longer sign in, the account deletion page explains how to ask by email. A single deleted book leaves the active database within 30 days, and backup copies are overwritten within 30 days.
Plans and pricing
Is it really free to start?
Yes. You start on the free plan with 50 AI actions and 15 pictures, and you don't need a card. Memberships add more.
What happens to my books if I cancel?
They stay in your account, and you can export every one to Markdown at any time, bibliographies too for non-fiction. Cancelling removes your AI allowance, not your work.
What counts as one text action, image, or reader feedback session?
One text action is one AI text request counted against your allowance. A full-book scan uses multiple requests; the total depends on which analyses you run and how many scenes are included. Manuscript import uses one action per 100,000 characters. One image action is one request to generate or refine an image. A reader feedback session is one real-reader round: a private link for the excerpt and questions, shared with invited readers. The round counts once, not once per reader; a simulated AI persona panel uses text actions instead. Free's text allowance is one-time; Author includes 500 text actions each month.
Can I get extra AI actions for free?
Yes, once, if you run out: review StoryWith from inside the app, whatever you rate us, and we add 10 AI actions to your account.
Which features are on the Free plan?
Every tool, with a small one-time AI allowance and basic continuity and coverage scans. Author, Pro and Studio add a monthly AI allowance, full scans, collaborators and reader feedback sessions.
How does membership work?
You can write for free. A paid membership raises how much you can analyse and generate each month. Memberships are set up and managed on the web rather than inside the mobile app: open “Membership” in your account menu to see your plan, switch it, or cancel. Cancelling stops the next renewal and leaves your access in place until the period you have already paid for ends. Either way your writing stays yours, and you can export it at any time.
Is there a free plan, and what can I try without an account?
Yes. The free plan needs no card and includes every tool, unlimited books and a small one-time AI allowance; the pricing page shows the current amount. With no account at all, the free tools, such as the manuscript readiness score, story rater and query letter grader, read a sample of your text and do not store it.
How much does StoryWith AI cost?
Author is $19 a month or $149 a year. Pro is $39 a month or $299 a year and includes unlimited AI text actions. Studio, for teams, is $79 a month at one flat rate for unlimited members. Prices are in US dollars, and tax is added at checkout. The pricing page lists every plan on offer right now.
Can I cancel, and is there a refund?
You can cancel from the billing page in your account at any time. Your plan runs to the end of the period you paid for, then your account moves to the free plan with your books in place. Subscriptions can be refunded within 14 days of your first purchase or upgrade: email support and say so.
Is there a free plan?
Yes. The Free plan gives you every tool and unlimited books, with 50 one-time AI text actions, 15 one-time AI images and basic continuity and coverage scans. No card is needed.
Can I rescan my manuscript after every revision?
Yes. Analyses run on your monthly AI allowance rather than on per-manuscript credits, so you can scan, revise and scan again. A book-level pass of a 90,000-word novel uses about 18 AI text actions, and running the scene-level analyzers on every scene adds about 375. Author includes 500 AI text actions a month and Pro includes unlimited AI text actions.
How much do I save with yearly billing?
Each plan shows its yearly total and any savings compared with twelve monthly payments. Yearly Author members also get a fourth reader feedback session each month.
What is your refund policy?
Subscriptions come with a 14-day refund, no questions asked: email support within 14 days of your first purchase or upgrade.
Can I cancel at any time?
Yes. Cancelling stops the next renewal and keeps your access until the end of the period you paid for. Your books stay in your account, and you can export them to Markdown at any time.
How does the Studio plan work for teams?
Studio gives every member everything in Pro at one flat price: unlimited members, a shared organization library, team roles and pooled AI quotas. There is no per-seat charge.
Which currency am I charged in?
Every plan is charged in US dollars, and tax is calculated at checkout. Where prices are shown in your local currency they are estimates, and your bank's exchange rate applies.
Can I switch plans later?
Yes. You can upgrade, downgrade or move between monthly and yearly billing from the billing page in your account.
Readers and collaboration
Can real readers give feedback on my draft?
Yes. Invite readers to a structured feedback session on a private link and see their reactions mapped chapter by chapter, like running your own beta-reader round.
What is the difference between AI reader personas and real readers?
Reader personas are simulated readers. A panel of 2 to 8 reads the same scene or chapter, and you compare how each reacted on engagement, clarity, emotional impact and genre fit. They are fast and come with every plan, but they are a first pass, not proof of how people will respond. A reader session puts your excerpt in front of real people.
How do real reader sessions work?
You choose the excerpts, add a few questions and share one private link. Each session collects 3 to 20 responses, can expire on a date you set, and can let readers answer anonymously or ask for an email first. No file is sent, and you see where each reader stopped reading. Reader sessions come with Author, Pro and Studio.
Can a co-author or editor work on the book with me?
Yes, on Author, Pro or Studio. Invite a co-author, editor or reviewer to one book, and the role you give them decides whether they can edit or only comment. Author allows up to 2 collaborators per book and Pro up to 5. Studio gives a team a shared library, roles and pooled AI.
Compared with other tools
How is this different from Sudowrite or NovelAI?
They are built to generate prose. StoryWith AI helps you shape and fix your own book: it diagnoses your draft, links each fix to the passage, and writes only when you ask, with nothing going in until you click to keep it.
Is StoryWith AI a replacement for a human editor?
No. It is a first pass before a human editor, not a substitute for one. It finds structural, pacing and continuity problems quickly, so the editing you pay for goes on judgment rather than on issues software can spot.
Should I use StoryWith AI before hiring a developmental editor?
That is the order it is designed for. Run the analysis, fix the structural, pacing and continuity problems it finds, and then pay an editor for judgment about voice, market and whether the book works. The free editing cost calculator estimates what each kind of edit costs for your word count.
How is it different from ProWritingAid or AutoCrit?
ProWritingAid and AutoCrit are best known for line editing: grammar, style, repetition and word choice. StoryWith AI works at the level of the whole book, with structure, continuity, character arcs and reader feedback, and links each finding to the passage behind it. You can use a line editor and StoryWith AI side by side.
Is StoryWith AI like Sudowrite or NovelAI?
They do opposite jobs. Sudowrite and NovelAI help you produce or extend prose. StoryWith AI reads prose you already wrote and tells you what is not working. You can draft with one and revise with the other.
How does it compare with Marlowe or Fictionary?
Marlowe produces a report on a draft, bought singly or with a credit plan, and Fictionary is structural editing software. StoryWith AI analyzes structure too, then adds a manuscript editor, a Story Bible, real reader sessions and non-fiction checks, and you can scan again after every revision.
Why not just paste chapters into ChatGPT?
For one scene, you can. For a book, a chat only sees what you paste, early chapters fall out of view as you add more, and general assistants lean encouraging rather than specific. StoryWith AI keeps the whole manuscript, its Story Bible and every analysis in one project, so a problem that spans chapters can be found.
Can I use StoryWith AI alongside Scrivener, Dabble or Google Docs?
Yes. Write wherever you like, then import a .docx, .md, .txt or .pdf file. StoryWith AI splits it into chapters and scenes and analyzes the whole draft.
Does StoryWith AI write the book for me?
No. The AI analyzes and advises: it finds structure, pacing and continuity problems and gathers reader feedback. Every word of the book stays yours.
Who wrote these comparisons?
The StoryWith AI team, so read them as a vendor's comparisons and check the other tool's own site before you buy. Every guide shows the date it was last updated.
Ways StoryWith AI helps
AI beta reader
What is an AI beta reader?
Software that reads a scene or chapter as a simulated reader and reports how it landed: engagement, clarity, emotional impact and genre fit. It is a quick first pass before human beta readers, not a replacement for them.
Is there a free AI beta reader?
Yes. StoryWith AI's free plan includes reader personas with a small one-time AI allowance, and it needs no card. For a quick check with no account at all, the free Story Rater scores one chapter or short story.
What is a virtual beta reader?
Another name for the same idea: an AI that reads your writing as a stand-in for a reader. StoryWith AI calls them reader personas, and you can run several on the same excerpt to compare their reactions.
Can an AI beta reader replace human beta readers?
No. It can spot where attention drops or something is unclear, but it cannot tell you whether a real person cared. Use personas to fix the structural problems first, then spend your human readers on what only they can judge.
Does the AI rewrite my chapter?
No. Personas report on what they read. Your manuscript changes only when you edit it, or accept a suggestion you asked for.
How many personas should I use?
Three to five gives the most useful comparison. You can add up to eight to a panel, but more personas make the comparison noisier.
Is my manuscript used to train AI models?
No. Your manuscript is private to you and the people you invite, and it is not used to train AI models.
AI book editor
What is an AI book editor?
Software that reviews a manuscript and suggests what to change. Some rewrite text for you, some correct grammar and style, and some, like StoryWith AI, analyze the whole book for structure, pacing, continuity and dialogue.
Is StoryWith AI a free AI book editor?
It has a free plan with every tool and a small one-time AI allowance, and no card is needed. Author, Pro and Studio add a monthly AI allowance and full scans.
Will it rewrite my book?
No. Analysis produces findings, not new text. If you ask for help with a passage, the result is a suggestion, and your text changes only when you accept it.
Can an AI book editor replace a human editor?
Not for judgment and taste. It is a strong first pass that catches structural and continuity problems quickly, so a human editor can spend their time on the questions only a person can answer.
Does it work for non-fiction?
Yes. Structure and readability checks apply to any book, and non-fiction adds argument mapping, fact-check support, citations and a book proposal generator.
Which file formats can I import?
.docx, .md, .txt and .pdf. A scanned PDF with no selectable text has to be saved as .docx or .md first.
Can I use it on my phone?
Yes. It works in any modern mobile browser, and there is an Android app on Google Play that uses the same account.
AI developmental editing
Can AI do developmental editing?
It can do much of the first pass: structure, pacing, continuity, setups and payoffs, character arcs and scene purpose across the whole book. It cannot replace an editor's judgment about voice, market and whether the book moves a reader.
What is the best AI for developmental editing?
Look for one that reads the whole manuscript rather than a chapter at a time, links each finding to its passage, and lets you check again after you revise. StoryWith AI does all three and adds reader feedback. Try any tool on your own draft before you pay.
How much does a developmental edit cost?
On the EFA's 2026 rate chart, fiction developmental editing runs 3-3.5 cents a word, about $2,700-$3,150 for a 90,000-word novel. The free calculator works it out for your word count.
Is an AI developmental edit a replacement for a human one?
No. It is the pass you run before a human one, so the editor works on a stronger draft and spends their time on judgment.
Does it rewrite my manuscript?
No. It reads and diagnoses. Nothing it produces goes into your manuscript unless you choose to put it there.
Does it work for non-fiction?
Yes. Structure checks apply to any book, and non-fiction adds argument mapping and soundness checks.
Is my manuscript used to train AI models?
No. It is private to you and the people you invite, and it is not used to train AI models.
Real reader feedback
What is beta reading software?
A tool for sharing an unpublished manuscript with beta readers and collecting their feedback in one place, instead of emailing files and chasing replies.
How many readers can I invite?
Each session collects 3 to 20 responses. You set the cap, and collection stops when it is reached.
Do my readers need an account?
Not if you allow anonymous responses. You can also ask for an email address before someone reads.
Do readers get a copy of my manuscript?
No file is sent. Readers read the excerpts you choose in the browser through a private link, and you can set the link to expire.
What questions should I ask beta readers?
Specific ones: where did you stop reading, what confused you, what did you expect to happen next. Three to five questions get the best completion, and our beta reader questionnaire has examples to start from.
How is this different from an AI beta reader?
An AI beta reader simulates readers. A reader session collects reactions from real people. StoryWith AI does both, so you can test a chapter on personas first and then compare with what real readers said.
Is my manuscript private?
Yes. Only you, your collaborators and the readers you share a session link with can see it, and it is not used to train AI models.
Non-fiction tools
Can AI edit a non-fiction book?
AI can do a useful first pass on structure, readability, unsupported claims and missing counter-arguments across the whole manuscript. Judgment about your field and your reader stays with you and your editor.
Does it check facts?
It points you to claims worth checking against the sources you added. It does not replace your own verification, and it does not add sources for you.
Which citation styles can I export?
APA, MLA and Chicago.
Can it write my book proposal?
It drafts one from your manuscript: overview, market analysis, chapter outline, sample chapters and author platform. Rewrite it in your own words before you send it.
Does it work for memoir?
Yes. Memoir and narrative non-fiction get the structural checks, reader personas and real reader sessions.
Will it rewrite my book?
No. It analyzes and advises. Your text changes only when you edit it, or accept a suggestion you asked for.
Is my manuscript used to train AI models?
No. Your manuscript is private to you and the people you invite, and it is not used to train AI models.
Memoir editor
Can AI edit a memoir?
It can do a useful first pass on structure, pacing, timeline, consistency and readability across the whole manuscript. Judgment about what your story means stays with you and, if you hire one, your editor.
Will it change my voice or rewrite my story?
No. It analyzes and advises. Your text changes only when you edit it, or accept a suggestion you asked for.
How long should a memoir be?
Writer's Digest puts the target at 80,000 to 89,999 words, the same as most adult novels, with the 70,000s acceptable. The free word count checker shows where your draft sits.
How much does a memoir editor cost?
It depends on the edit and the length, and a developmental edit of a full memoir usually costs the most. The free editing cost calculator estimates each type of edit from the Editorial Freelancers Association's published rates.
Is my memoir private?
Yes. Your manuscript is private to you and the people you invite, and it is not used to train AI models.
Can real people read it before I publish?
Yes, on Author, Pro or Studio. Share chapters in a private reader session through a link. Readers answer your questions in the browser, and you see where each one stopped reading.
Does it work for personal essays and narrative non-fiction?
Yes. Set a personal essay or narrative non-fiction up the same way as a memoir to get the narrative checks. For a book of ideas, set it up as Non-fiction to get argument mapping and source checks.
Free tools and templates
Manuscript Readiness Score
Is the readiness score really free?
Yes. There's no card and no signup. Free tools share a fair-use limit of 6 runs every 12 hours, so everyone gets a turn.
How much of my manuscript can I check?
Up to about 10,000 words, roughly your first three chapters. Many agents' submission guidelines ask for an opening sample of about that size. To check the whole manuscript, start a free StoryWith AI account and upgrade when you're ready to analyze the whole book.
Do you keep my chapters?
No. Your text is sent to our AI provider to produce the score and isn't saved by StoryWith AI. We don't use it to train AI models.
Can a score tell me if an agent will sign my book?
No. Agents weigh the market, their list and their own taste, and no tool can predict that. The score tells you whether your opening pages have the problems that most often get a manuscript rejected early.
Why did my score change when I ran it again?
The ratings come from an AI reading, so a rerun can move by a few points. Look at which findings repeat across runs: those are the ones to fix.
Which languages does it work in?
It reads your chapters in the language they're written in and answers in that language.
How is this different from the full manuscript analysis?
This tool reads a sample in one pass. The full analysis in StoryWith AI reads the whole book scene by scene, tracks continuity, maps your structure and links every finding to its passage, and you can rescan after each revision.
First Page Critique
Is the first page critique free?
Yes, with no signup. Free tools share a fair-use limit of 6 runs every 12 hours.
How much should I paste?
Your first page, or a little more. It reads up to about 2,000 words, which covers the opening scene of most novels. For the first chapters, use the readiness score.
Is my page stored or used for training?
No. It's sent to our AI provider to produce the critique and isn't saved by StoryWith AI. We don't use it to train AI models.
What is the stop point?
The single line where a reader browsing your opening would most likely put the book down, with the reason. If the page would hold them to the end, the critique says there is no stop point.
Why isn't my score higher?
The critique is told to be honest rather than encouraging: a 5 means a competent opening with clear problems, and a 7 means strong. Apply the fixes and run it again.
Should I choose a genre?
It helps. Readers of a thriller and readers of literary fiction expect different openings, and the genre tells the critique which expectations to read against. It's optional.
Can I critique a page in another language?
Yes. It reads your page in the language it's written in and answers in that language.
Plot Hole Checker
Is the plot hole checker free?
Yes, with no signup. Free tools share a fair-use limit of 6 runs every 12 hours.
What should I paste?
A synopsis or a summary of each chapter, up to about 2,000 words, ending included. You can add a short excerpt of a scene you're unsure about.
Can it check my whole manuscript?
Not this free tool. It reads a summary, which is enough to test the story's logic but not every line. StoryWith AI checks continuity across the full manuscript.
Is my story stored or used for training?
No. It's sent to our AI provider to produce the check and isn't saved by StoryWith AI. We don't use it to train AI models.
Why does it say possible plot holes?
Because it reads a summary. Your book may already explain something the outline leaves out, so each issue is a place to look, not a verdict.
What if it finds nothing?
Then the logic in your summary holds together. It can't see details the summary leaves out, so a careful read of the manuscript is still worth doing.
Can I check a story in another language?
Yes. It reads your outline in the language it's written in and answers in that language.
Story Rater
Is the Story Rater free?
Yes, with no signup. Free tools share a fair-use limit of 6 runs every 12 hours.
How long can my story be?
Up to about 5,000 words, which covers most chapters and many short stories. For a whole novel, use the full manuscript analysis.
Is my story stored or used for training?
No. It's sent to our AI provider to produce the rating and isn't saved by StoryWith AI. We don't use it to train AI models.
Does it work for fan fiction, screenplays or poetry?
It's built for prose fiction, so fan fiction and short stories work well. Screenplays and poetry follow different rules, and the ratings will be less useful.
Why isn't my score higher?
The rater is told to be honest rather than encouraging: a 5 means a competent draft with clear problems, and a 7 means strong. Apply the three fixes and rate it again.
Can I rate a story in another language?
Yes. It reads your story in the language it's written in and answers in that language.
Does a high score mean my story is good?
It means the piece avoids the problems readers notice most often. Whether it's good is up to readers, so use the rating to find what to revise, then get feedback from people too.
Query Letter Grader
Is the query letter review free?
Yes, with no signup. The instant checks are unlimited because they run in your browser. The AI review shares the free tools' fair-use limit of 6 runs every 12 hours.
Do the instant checks work in any language?
The instant checks are written for English query letters. The AI review reads the letter in the language it's written in and answers in that language.
How long should a query letter be?
The usual advice is about one page: 250 to 400 words. A letter that runs long risks losing the reader before it reaches the stakes.
Should I include comparable titles?
Yes, if you can find good ones: one or two books from the last few years that share your book's readers. Avoid huge bestsellers and classics, which say more about your hopes than your market.
Is my letter stored?
No. For the AI review it's sent to our AI provider and isn't saved by StoryWith AI. We don't use it to train AI models.
Can you write the query letter for me?
Our free query letter generator drafts one from six answers about your book. Then bring the draft back here to grade it.
Query Letter Generator
Is the query letter generator free?
Yes, with no signup. Free tools share a fair-use limit of 6 runs every 12 hours.
Will agents know I used a generator?
They might, if you send the draft as it is. Use it for structure and a starting point, then rewrite it in your own voice. That's what makes a query stand out.
Does it work for nonfiction?
It's built for novels and memoir. Nonfiction books are usually sold with a proposal instead, and StoryWith AI's Pro plan includes a nonfiction proposal generator.
Why does it ask for comparable titles?
Agents use comps to see where your book sits on the shelf and who will buy it. One or two recent titles are enough. If you leave the field empty, the draft leaves a placeholder for you to fill.
Is what I type stored?
No. It's sent to our AI provider to write the draft and isn't saved by StoryWith AI. We don't use it to train AI models.
Can it write a blurb or pick a title too?
Not this tool. StoryWith AI's pitch kit drafts a query letter, a back-cover blurb and title alternatives from your actual manuscript, so they match the book you wrote.

Is the comp title finder free?
Yes, with no signup. Free tools share a fair-use limit of 6 runs every 12 hours.
Are the books real?
Each suggestion is looked up in Google Books and in our own catalog before it's shown, and books neither one has are left out. If the catalog can't be reached, a suggestion is labeled "Check this book exists" instead.
Why did I get fewer than six?
The finder asks for six and shows only the ones it could confirm, each once. A shorter list means some suggestions were left out, which is the point.
How recent should comps be?
Agents quoted in our comp titles guide ask for books from roughly the last two to five years. Books older than 5 years are flagged here.
Should I read the books before naming them?
Yes. A comp tells an agent your book shares its readers, so you need to know it does. Use this list as a starting point for your reading.
Is my premise stored or used for training?
No. It's sent to our AI provider to suggest the books, and only the suggested titles are looked up in Google Books. StoryWith AI doesn't save it, and we don't use it to train AI models.
Can I use it in another language?
Yes. Write your premise in any language and the reasons come back in that language. Titles are shown as the catalog lists them.
Synopsis Generator
Is the synopsis generator free?
Yes, with no signup. Free tools share a fair-use limit of 6 runs every 12 hours.
Does a synopsis give away the ending?
Yes. An agent reads a synopsis to see whether the whole story works, so it tells the ending plainly. That's why the generator asks for it.
How long should a synopsis be?
It depends on the agent, so check their guidelines. The generator aims for about one page, which is a common request and is easier to expand than to cut.
Is my story stored or used for training?
No. Your answers are sent to our AI provider to produce the draft and aren't saved by StoryWith AI. We don't use them to train AI models.
Will it invent plot I didn't give it?
It's told not to. Where something seems to be missing for the story to follow, it leaves a placeholder in square brackets for you to fill in.
Can I write my synopsis in another language?
Yes. Answer in the language of your book, and the draft comes back in that language.
Book Blurb Generator
Is the blurb generator free?
Yes, with no signup. Free tools share a fair-use limit of 6 runs every 12 hours.
What is the difference between a blurb and a synopsis?
A blurb sells the book to readers and keeps the ending hidden. A synopsis is for agents and editors, tells the whole story and gives the ending away. Use the synopsis generator for that.
Can I use the blurb on Amazon?
Yes. A blurb works as your back-cover copy and as the book description on a retailer page. Edit it first so it sounds like you and matches your book.
Is my description stored or used for training?
No. It's sent to our AI provider to write the blurbs and isn't saved by StoryWith AI. We don't use it to train AI models.
Does it reveal the ending?
No. It's told to stop at the choice or danger your story builds to, the way a published blurb does.
Can I write a blurb in another language?
Yes. Describe your book in its own language, and the blurbs come back in that language.
Book Title Generator
Is the book title generator free?
Yes, with no signup. Free tools share a fair-use limit of 6 runs every 12 hours.
Can it suggest titles based on my plot?
Yes. That's how it works: it reads the premise you write and draws every title from details in it. The more specific your description, the more specific the titles.
Can I use a title that another book already has?
In the US, titles generally can't be copyrighted, so a title on its own is often reused. A well-known title can still confuse readers and bury your book in search results, so it's usually better to choose a distinctive one. This isn't legal advice.
Is my description stored or used for training?
No. It's sent to our AI provider to suggest titles and isn't saved by StoryWith AI. We don't use it to train AI models.
Why did I get different titles the second time?
The generator is set to be creative, so each run gives a new set. Run it again with a mood or a few keywords to steer it.
Can I get titles in another language?
Yes. Describe your book in the language you are writing in, and the titles come back in that language.
Editing Cost Calculator
How much does it cost to edit a 90,000-word novel?
Using the EFA's 2026 fiction ranges: a developmental edit costs about $2,700-$3,150, a line edit about $2,430-$3,150, a copyedit about $1,800-$2,430 and a proofread about $1,080-$1,800. All four together come to about $8,010-$10,530.
Why does nonfiction cost more to edit?
The EFA chart's nonfiction rates are higher at every stage. Nonfiction editing also covers the logic of the argument and the consistency of facts and references, which takes longer per page.
Should I pay per word, per page or per hour?
Per word or per project is easiest to budget, because the price is fixed before work starts. Hourly rates are common too: ask for an estimate of the hours and a cap.
Do I need a developmental edit before querying agents?
Not necessarily. Many authors query after revising with beta readers. A developmental edit helps most when you've revised and know something isn't working but can't see what.
How long does an edit take?
It depends on the editor's schedule more than the word count. The EFA chart lists typical pages per hour for each edit, and the calculator turns that into editor hours, but many editors book weeks or months ahead.
Is the calculator free?
Yes, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
Novel Word Count Checker
How many words is a novel?
For an adult novel, agents usually look for 80,000 to 89,999 words, and about 70,000 to 109,999 is generally acceptable, depending on the genre.
How long should a fantasy novel be?
For a debut, 100,000 to 115,000 words is the usual target, with 90,000 to 124,000 accepted. Science fiction is the same.
How long is a young adult novel?
55,000 to 79,999 words is the typical range. The 80,000s can work with a good reason, and fantasy and science fiction YA often run longer.
How long is a middle grade novel?
20,000 to 55,000 words. Upper middle grade sits at the long end, around 40,000 to 55,000.
How long should a romance or a thriller be?
Both sit with adult fiction: 80,000 to 89,999 words is the target, and 70,000 to 109,999 is usually accepted.
Is 120,000 words too long for a debut?
For most genres, yes: it is above the range agents accept for a first novel. For science fiction and fantasy it is on the long side but still inside the accepted range, which runs to about 124,000.
Where do these numbers come from?
From Chuck Sambuchino's guide for Writer's Digest (2016). Ranges shift a little from agent to agent, so read each agent's guidelines before you query.
Beat Sheet Calculator
What is a beat sheet?
A list of a story's turning points, its beats, with roughly where each one falls. Writers use one to plan a draft or to check the pacing of a finished one.
How do I work out where each beat falls?
Multiply your total word count by the beat's percentage. In an 88,000-word novel, a beat at 10% falls around word 8,800 and the midpoint around word 44,000. The calculator does every beat at once.
Where should the midpoint fall in a novel?
At about 50%, in Save the Cat! and in three-act structure alike: around word 45,000 in a 90,000-word book.
Does a beat sheet work for every genre?
It fits most commercial fiction, from thrillers and mysteries to romance and fantasy, and literary fiction often follows it more loosely. Treat the percentages as a guide, not a rule: in Syd Field's paradigm, the form matters more than the page numbers.
What is the difference between Save the Cat! and three acts?
Save the Cat! is a three-act structure broken into 15 named beats. Syd Field's three-act paradigm names fewer points: the inciting incident, two plot points and a midpoint.
Do my chapters need to be the same length?
No. The calculator assumes they are only to estimate the chapter for each beat. What matters is roughly where the turns land in the whole book.
Is it free, and is anything I type stored?
It is free, with no signup. It runs in your browser, and nothing you type is sent anywhere.
Query Letter Template
What is the standard format for a query letter?
One page, in the body of the email: a greeting, a hook, a short pitch, the title, genre, word count and comps, a brief bio and a sign-off. Send no attachments unless the agent's guidelines ask for them.
How long should a query letter be?
250 to 350 words, the range former agent Nathan Bransford recommends and a common target. Shorter usually leaves out the stakes. Longer usually means the pitch is retelling the plot.
Do the book details go first or last?
Either works. Many writers lead with the hook and put the title, genre and word count after the pitch. If someone referred you, or you met the agent at an event, say that first.
What do I write in the bio with no publishing credits?
Two or three sentences about who you are and anything that connects you to the story, such as a job, a place or an experience. A short bio with no credits is normal for a debut.
How many comp titles should I use?
Two is the usual number. Pick books from the last five years or so, in your genre, that sold well without being household names.
Can I use this template for nonfiction?
Use it for a novel or a memoir. Most nonfiction is sold on a book proposal instead, so start with the book proposal template.
Is the template free?
Yes. Copy it, change anything you like and use it for as many queries as you need. No signup.
Book Synopsis Template
What is a book synopsis?
A summary of a novel from beginning to end, ending included, that agents and editors use to judge whether the plot works.
How long should a synopsis be?
One to two pages, about 500 to 1,000 words single spaced, unless the agent's guidelines give a different length.
Should a synopsis give away the ending?
Yes. A synopsis that hides the ending leaves out the one thing the agent asked to see: how the story resolves.
Should a synopsis be in first or third person?
Third person and present tense, even when the novel is written in first person. A memoir synopsis is the exception: Jane Friedman recommends first person there, though third is acceptable.
What is the difference between a synopsis and a query letter?
The query letter pitches the book and stops before the ending. The synopsis tells the whole story, ending included. Many agents ask for both.
Do I need a synopsis to self-publish?
Usually not. Amazon KDP, for example, asks for a book description: sales copy that stops before the ending. A synopsis is still worth writing: it tests whether the plot holds together, and it makes the description easier to write.
Is the template free?
Yes. Copy it, or download it as a text file on the website. No signup.
Book Proposal Template
What is a nonfiction book proposal?
A document that sells a nonfiction book before it is written: an overview, the market, comparable titles, your platform, a marketing plan, a chapter outline and sample chapters.
How long should a book proposal be?
It varies. With the sample chapters included, many proposals run to a few dozen pages. Clarity counts for more than length, and each agent's guidelines come first.
Do I need to finish the book before I write a proposal?
No. That is the point of a proposal: most nonfiction is sold on the overview, the outline and a sample of the writing. Memoir is the exception that often needs more.
Does fiction need a book proposal?
No. Novels are almost always sold on a finished manuscript and a query letter. Use the query letter template instead.
What should the marketing plan include?
Concrete things you will do: the newsletter you will send, the events where you will speak, the outlets you can pitch and the partners who will share the book. Numbers help.
How many sample chapters should I include?
Usually one or two, often starting with the first. Some agents ask for more, so check their guidelines.
Is the template free?
Yes. Copy it and adapt it as you like. No signup.
Character Profile Template
What is a character profile?
A working document about one character: who they are, what they want and fear, how they look and speak, who they know and how they change over the story.
What should a character profile include?
At minimum: name, role, the want, the need, the wound and the arc. Appearance, voice, relationships and continuity notes help as the book grows.
How detailed should a character profile be?
Detailed for the main characters and short for everyone else. A profile that takes longer to write than the chapters is a way of putting off the draft.
What is the difference between a character profile and a story bible?
A profile covers one character. A story bible collects every character, place and fact in the book, so they stay consistent from the first chapter to the last.
Should I fill it in before or after the first draft?
Either. Planners fill in the basics and the inner life first. Discovery writers fill it in during or after the draft, to keep details straight in revision.
Does it work for memoir?
Yes. Use it for the real people in your story, especially their relationships and the continuity notes, so dates and details stay straight.
Is the template free?
Yes. Copy it and use it for as many characters as you like. No signup.
Story Bible Template
What is a story bible?
A reference document that records every character, place, rule and date in a book or series, so the facts stay the same from the first chapter to the last.
What should a story bible include?
An overview, a style sheet, the cast, places, the rules of the world, a timeline, important objects and a list of open setups and payoffs. A series adds what carries over from book to book.
How is a story bible different from an outline?
An outline plans what will happen. A story bible records what is already true in the draft. Many writers keep both.
What is a series bible?
A story bible for more than one book. It keeps the facts readers learned in earlier books fixed, and tracks how characters and relationships change between them.
When should I start a story bible?
During the first draft, as facts appear on the page. Planners can fill in the overview and world rules before they start; the rest is easiest to record as you write.
Is a character bible the same thing?
A character bible is the cast section on its own, usually with a full profile for each main character. Our free character profile template covers that part in more depth.
Is the template free?
Yes. Copy it, or download it as a text file on the website, and use it for as many books as you like. No signup.
