How a query letter is structured
Agents expect the same shape from every letter, so they can find what they need in seconds. The generator follows it.
- The hook: one or two sentences that introduce your protagonist and the moment their story starts.
- The story: what they want, what's in the way and what they stand to lose, in present tense and without the ending.
- The book: title in capitals, genre, word count rounded to the nearest thousand, and your comps.
- The bio: only what's relevant. A first novel with no credits is normal, so don't apologize for it.
Make the draft yours
Treat the result as a first draft. Agents can tell a template from a voice, and the voice should be yours, so rewrite any sentence that doesn't sound like your book.
Check every fact, fill in anything in square brackets and personalize the greeting for each agent. The generator never invents credentials, so if your bio paragraph is short, that's honest, and fine.
Grade your draft next
Paste the finished letter into the free query letter grader. It checks length, word count, genre, comps and greeting instantly, then rates your hook, stakes, voice and clarity with line-level fixes.
Open the query letter graderWhat agents read after the letter
A strong letter gets your pages read, and the pages decide the request. So once the letter works, check the opening chapters too.
The free readiness score reads up to about 10,000 words and tells you what would make an agent stop.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is the query letter generator free?
Yes, with no signup. Free tools share a fair-use limit of 6 runs every 12 hours.
Will agents know I used a generator?
They might, if you send the draft as it is. Use it for structure and a starting point, then rewrite it in your own voice. That's what makes a query stand out.
Does it work for nonfiction?
It's built for novels and memoir. Nonfiction books are usually sold with a proposal instead, and StoryWith AI's Pro plan includes a nonfiction proposal generator.
Why does it ask for comparable titles?
Agents use comps to see where your book sits on the shelf and who will buy it. One or two recent titles are enough. If you leave the field empty, the draft leaves a placeholder for you to fill.
Is what I type stored?
No. It's sent to our AI provider to write the draft and isn't saved by StoryWith AI. We don't use it to train AI models.
Can it write a blurb or pick a title too?
Not this tool. StoryWith AI's pitch kit drafts a query letter, a back-cover blurb and title alternatives from your actual manuscript, so they match the book you wrote.
